Hello,
I am a Canadian citizen. My boyfriend will come to visit me in a month. We plant to get married and to apply for inland sponsorship. He has a Bulgarian driver's license (has had it for almost 8 years and Bulgaria is now part of the European Union). My question is the following: If he wants to drive here (not only for the first 2-3 months), will he be able to do that with an international driver's license ? Or can he get a driver's license here right away since we will be married?

p.s. I live in Quebec

First of all, he won't be able to get a Quebec license until he's PR

"Permanent residents must bring the Confirmation of Permanent Residence document. It is impossible to issue a Québec driver's licence or exchange a foreign licence without this document. A permanent resident card is not sufficient."

Here's a link about getting the license: http://www.saaq.gouv.qc.ca/en/driver_licence/exchange/residents_other.php

As for him driving with a foreign license, from this link (http://www.saaq.gouv.qc.ca/en/driver_licence/exchange/temporary_residents.php) it says he can with his foreign license :)

Hi,

As I know if your boyfriend wants to drive he has to have an international driver's license (http://www.saaq.gouv.qc.ca/en/driver_licence/exchange/temporary_residents.php). Any way call SAAQ.

I'm glad to know Quebec has it right.
It's amazing the stuff you can get away with as a tourist according to a previous thread in Alberta and apparently Ontario as well...

Lets see if I can get a temporary SIN number next as a tourist, Service Canada is still working on my request/complaint ;D
