Just trying to wrap our heads around all of the information out there so any advice is appreciated!

I am a Canadian Citizen and my husband is Bahamian (no visa required for visits under 6 months). He currently has a student permit and is working part time but based on all the expenses we're about to incur with the immigration process, and some other things, he's thinking of taking a year or so off of school and just working until everything is finalized.

So let's say he got a job offer, went home for a while and applied for a work permit for that job then returns to Canada after he has that. If we were to then apply for spousal sponsorship, could he keep working until he gets on OWP (in case he ends up wanting to work some where else later) or will he still need to stop working until that comes in? Basically, just looking for ideas for him to be off work as short a time as possible.

Or maybe remaining a student until the OWP comes in is the best option?

If he were to take the next semester off school to save money, but apply before then, would he be here under "implied" status until the OWP comes in or would he still have to leave because he is no longer studying?

Thanks for any advice/suggestions!

If he stops attending school his study permit will be automatically canceled. He must also stop working as soon as he stops attending school (continuing to work will be illegal and a violation of his status in Canada).

If he wants to stop attending school, he should apply to change his status to visitor to avoid going out of status in Canada while he waits for PR. In this case he needs to stop working as soon as he stops attending school and won't be able to start again until the OWP is approved.

If he wants to keep working part time, then he needs to stay in school as a full time student. Once the OWP is approved, he can then stop attending and start working full time.

Also - he can't leave Canada for long period of time while waiting for the OWP to be approved. Applying inland requires the two of you to be living together in Canada. He should ideally avoid leaving during the four months you wait for the OWP (from the time the sponsorship and OWP application are submitted).
