Dear all,
I have a question and based on the replies I will take a very important decision.
I was doing a full time job and recently in February 2020, my hours were cut in half die to Covid. Now I am thinking of applying to get the CRB assistance at least for one or two periods (4 weeks maximum).
My question is, if I got any government assistant will that affect my future citizenship application? Given that I will be applying for citizenship in 2.5 years.
I have read before that welfare affects citizenship somehow but does that with hold now??.

Please let me know and senior members are requested to assist me

Why would it affect your citizenship application? There is no rule, according to IRCC, says you cannot get welfare while you're a PR. Especially with CERB and EI, they are taxable, so you do pay part of it from your work.

It's not a written rule per se, it's a hidden rule, like the one involving extensive travel. Nothing says it affects on paper but it sometimes puts the application under scrutiny.

And its not confirmed ofc I am just saying that I have read cases where they mentioned that getting welfare or relying on it does somehow affect it

So you’re saying it’s a hidden rule based on what someone had commented on the internet? I would be skeptical about a comment like that, there are lots of misinformed ppl out there to say the least. EI or CERB can't affect your citizenship application because these are insurance benefits provided by the government. You have contributed to this pool paycheck to paycheck. Unless you are claiming a benefit you are not entitled and comitting fraud, but that's a whole different story!

bruh that’s the dumbest bs I have read on this website. Did you read cases online or were they the imaginary ones you just made up on the spot?

If your question isn’t already answered, then no. IRCC has more important things to do than discriminate and risk being sued because someone is on welfare. I’m laughing just typing the answer out lol

Hi,

Claiming CRB or EI is not a criminal offence

First of all, on this forum you are not in the position to call someone dumb.
Second of all, yes I won't just say that without reading cases of people being unemployed and loving off welfare who had their cases put under scrutiny for a very long time

There may very well be another reason why these ppl were put under scrutiny and not necessarily EI or welfare in general. Also, keep in mind that unless you personally know someone whose application was heavily scrutinized due to EI or welfare, ppl on the internet won't share the full history.

Hey everyone,
I know people are surprised that this is happening and they think I have posted random findings
I did see cases where people where unemployed for periods of time and have been claiming EI and others and they have had issued with their application.

Honestly, I really doubt that, unless some sort of welfare fraud has occurred, unemployment is not a deciding factor for citizenship applications.
This forum is designed to to share information and its interpretation is totally up to your discretion.

Maybe it's more about checking they were actually in Canada as they weren't working? Also if it helps, I have lots of gaps in employment due to not being a citizen (my job requires citizenship to work more than 90 workdays in a year) and being home with my babies. I had EI for 1 year (maternity leave) and don't believe there was extra scrutiny of my application, other than them asking to send scans of all pages of my passports. Which supports my theory of checking my presence.

If collecting EI or CERB won't cause any problem for sponsorship, I don't see how this can be a problem for citizenship. By the way, EI and CERB are not welfare. You can even count CERB as income for the 2020 tax year.
How financial benefits affect family sponsorship
If you collect the Canada Emergency Response Benefit (CERB), you’re still eligible to sponsor your spouse, parent, grandparent, child, or other relative as long as you meet all the requirements to be a sponsor.

CERB isn’t considered social assistance. Collecting CERB won’t make you ineligible to sponsor.

We recently put a temporary public policy in place which lets any family class sponsors who must meet income requirements count CERB in their income calculations for the 2020 tax year. This is in addition to other benefits:

  • regular employment insurance (EI) benefits (rather than just special benefits)
  • any CERBs issued under the
    • Employment Insurance Act or
    • Canadian Emergency Response Benefit Act
  • other temporary COVID-19-related benefits
    • as long as they are not part of provincial social assistance programs
EI and CERB won’t cause you to default
If the person you sponsored collects EI or the CERB during the undertaking period, it will not cause you to default.

Thank you for this post, is CRB the same as CERB ? In terms of it being not social assistance
