I've got a friend who is planning to apply for BOWP but his kids' passports will expire already and the processing of the passport renewals will take 6 months!

He is thinking to get BOWP, once he is within 4 months, but the passports will expire in the first month of the 4 month BOWP requirement.

Appreciate any reply and inputs.

Thanks in advance!

Yes BOWP expiry depends on passport expiry.. even my passport had 4 months validity at the time of BOWP approval so i only got 4 months of BOWP.. later i renewed my passport and got my BOWp extended by another 8 months.. its just additional hassle and waste of $155 so might as well apply for BOWP with more than 15-16 months validity on passport at the time of BOWP application submission.

I have a friend who applied for OWP after study. His passport was expiring after 1.5 yrs. CIC issued him only 1.5 yrs OWP.
He called CIC and ask for more validity. CIC said because of the Passport is expiring in 1.5 yrs you cannot get permit for more then 1.5 yrs, you need to renew passport first and then apply again. He renewed passport and applied and he got remaining 1.5 yrs OWP. on that passport.

I know this because I helped him for OWP application.

I think it would be the same for BOWP.

Thanks a lot for the input guys!

This is exactly what he fears. He can already for BOWP in April (work permit expires on July). His kids' passport will expire in April as well.

Assuming he can already start expediting their passports next week (Feb). He may receive them on July (6 months) - pretty tight!!!

If he will start the passport renewal already thus he doesn't hold their passports anymore until July, can he still apply for BOWP?

I don't think so. Because technically he don't have valid Status document for extension and also for Travel. So there is no valid proof of your Travel Document.

Sorry about that bro...

Yeah, hard times man, hard times.

But thanks a lot for the inputs!

Did I miss something? Cabalen did not say his friend's passport expires, only the passports of the children. Is that correct?

Children are not eligible for BOWPs. ONLY the Principal applicant (PA) is eligible for the BOWP. Other family members may be eligible for spouse/dependent open work permits/study permits based on the PA's BOWP. And applications MAY be submitted at the same time as the PA applies for the BOWP, but it is not required. The PA's eligibility for the BOWP is independent of the other family members' status.

Cabalen, your friend should apply to renew the kids' passports ASAP, obviously. He can apply for his BOWP as soon as he is eligible. And then he can apply for the spouse/dependents' permits when ready. If their old permits expire before he gets the new passports, then he will have to pay extra for restoration of their status. Unfortunately, that is the cost of not keeping on top of this...

But at least he can keep is own status current. As the PA, that is the most important -

You are correct jes_ON! He and his spouse still have valid passports and only their kids need to be renewed. He is concerned that this will have complications or concerns with kids having expired study permits.

I think he also checking to get travel documents from his country in support for the expiring passports of his kids during his BOWP application.

Thanks for your input! ;D
