Hi all,

I’m a British emergency medicine trainee and I’m looking at doing a 4 month elective in Canada next year with a view towards possibly immigrating once I’ve finished my training.

The only issue is a few years ago I accepted a police caution for stealing a box of codeine (worth 83 pence) at work. At the time I was struggling with a lot of personal issues and a health condition, which have all been dealt with. I have spoken to someone from the Medical Council of Canada and they indicated that it wouldn’t be an issue for getting a licence to practice, but I’ve found lots of conflicting information about how it might affect any immigration application since there’s no direct equivalent of a caution in Canada.

Does anyone know if this will stop me from getting a visa? I don’t want to waste my time and apply for the elective if there’s no realistic prospect of me being allowed into the country...

Can’t answer about the immigration aspect but hospital certainly may be reluctant to hire you given that you will have to declare your criminal record and stealing a controlled substance from a hospital is certainly a red flag about potential abuse problems.
