My spouse needs a place closeby his work temporarily, but for my current work I might not be able to go there for now. Do we have to be living under the same roof for me to be his sponsor?

If you are married not really, but be aware that they will scrutinize your marriage very closely if you are not living together (especially extended period of time). That is of course if you apply inland.
It is obvious that if you apply outland (your spouse not being in Canada), then you will have to be separated.
And yes in order to be able to sponsor your spouse you would have to be living in Canada unless you are sent out by Canadian government or military forces.

Thanks! Both in the same country right now. Do you have any links where this is confirmed? I tried looking online including the CIC website and didn’t find a definitive answer.

A sponsor has to live in Canada, regardless whom are you sponsoring (exceptions are the same that are counted toward citizenship - Canadian army or Canadian government).

From there, following is logical:
If your spouse is an outland applicant you cannot really live together (that is to be expected).
If your spouse is inland applicant then you want to live together (that is why you apply for the sponsorship in a first place to live with your family).

Then on a general level they do check if the couple is genuine. So living apart while being able to live together is just a red flag. Of course that does not mean that you will be rejected, but your relationship will be checked in more detail.

If you apply inland, you are required to be living together in Canada throughout the process. If you apply outland, you are not required live together. This is stated on the checklist and in the guide.

A Canadian citizen does not have to live in Canada to sponsor a spouse. That requirement only applies to PRs.
