So my original study permit (applied outside Canada) and the passport stamp (is this called the eTA?) that came with it has expired. I applied for a study permit extension inland and got approved, but only received a document and no request for passport to be stamped. Does this mean i have to apply for a separate TRV to get my passport stamped if i want to leave the country?

Whether you need an eTA or TRV depends on whether you hold a visa exempt passport or not.

Yes, you need to separately apply for an eTA or TRV if you want to leave and be able to re-enter Canada. You can leave Canada without the eTA/TRV but need it to return.
