I am an American citizen. I have been in a relationship with a Canadian citizen for over 6 years. Prior to that 6 year relationship , I was in a horrible marriage, but got a divorce. My current, Canadian, partner and I will be getting married and then I will be applying for a PR so that I can begin working, with him being my sponsor.

Does Canada need proof of my American divorce? Do I need to let my current partner and our lawyer know if this prior marriage?

Yes, they will. You can check the requirements here:

For the most part it just means providing copies of the divorce papers, exact form depends where you got divorced.

Note, in MOST places you get married in USA/Canada, you'll also need to show the divorce papers or evidence you have no impediment to marriage.
