my Chinese passport expires in Feb 2012, do I need to bring a valid passport to my landing appointment?

do they put anything in the passport like a stamp or anything? it does not matter how many days left that is still valid for right? Debating if I want to go through the hassle of renewing my passport. Hoping I can get my 2nd stage approval before the expiry date.

Yes, they stamp the passport and it requires 1 days validity.

Why wait? You will need a new passport to leave Canada, and it takes only a few days to renew. Just make sure to keep the old passport, since if the new passport sports a new number, you might be asked to show the old number too.

No, as long as the passport is still valid, the OP can use the passport and landing visa to Canada. After landing, if OP wants to return to China, he/she can apply for a renewed passport from the local Chinese consulate in Canada. Furthermore, according to the Chinese consulate in Vancouver, it takes approximately one month to get a renewed passport and there is no expedite services.

I didn't know it took as long as a month to get a new passport. All the more reason to get a new one BEFORE landing, now while there is still lots if time, in case the PR wants to return to China soon after landing.

the thing is I just started a job 9-5 weekdays and can't ask for time off, the local embassy is only open 9-12pn and can't even reach them on the phone to ask for what documents are required to get a new passport, nowhere to download the application online either. I won't be going back to China at least till next fall, if I renew my passport now for 5 years, pretty much a year validity will be wasted. I might do it end of Jan, since I'm inland and been wating for 2nd stage for 11month now :o

Therefore it will be ideal that the PR visa is stamped one day before the expiry of your existing Chinese passport. Finger crossed.

lets say my PR visa stamp is on the old passport, and I do get a new passport, do I need a stamp in my new passport as well? or do I just carry both passport while traveling?

called CIC today still doing my background check after 12 month from AIP

1) China passports are good for 10 years, not 5, correct? Not an important point, but just for accuracy.

2) I see the difficulty of renewing the passport now.

3) So, if you get the Canada visa stamp in China passport #1, then renew your passport (#2), make sure that China will return passport #1 to you, and will leave the page with Canada visa untouched. For example, when I renewed my Canadian passport recently, in Canada, the Canada employee cut off the corners of the pages of my old passport -- EXCEPT the page containing my China visa. When I re-entered China, I showed both passports and no problems.

But as for travelling before getting your Permanent Residency card, be aware that the Canada visa stamp in your China passport is good for one entry into Canada, not two or more. So, if you use that one-time visa, then leave Canada before receiving your Permanent Residency card, you will need to get a travel document from a local Canada embassy to re-enter Canada. Once you have the PR card ion hand, that plus your China passport will get you anywhere (except the USA) without needing a consular visa.

No, if you get a new passport, your old passport becomes invalid. You would need get a new PR visa in your new passport.

There is a scenario in the thread Inland 2010. The wife just get AIP recently but her passport is expiring on somewhere around christmas day. When they receive the AIP letter, it says that she had to renew her passport first before CIC will continue the seccond stage of her application and gave her 90 days to produce a new passport... So husband and wife went to Chinese embassy here in Canada.. Chinese embassy turn down to renew her passport because wife have expired visa..Her visitors visa expired months ago.. So now she's stuck.. She can't renew her passport because she have an expired visa.. And her OWP is turn down because her passport will expire soon..
