So a super quick backdrop before I ask.

I am a UK national so I am the sponsee. My partner is Canadian so she is the sponsor.

I am recently unemployed but I have already purchased the entry plane ticket and the return plane ticket 6 months later. This is important.

When I fly over, I would have just done enough temp/odd job work to pay my credit cards off but when I land I will be pretty much be living off of some of my own debts but 80% her money. She earns an excellent wage so is more than capable of looking after both of us.

Now, we are looking to get married within a month of landing and then putting a family (spouse) visa application in. This will take roughly 10 months so obviously after 5 months of being in the country I will need to request a tourist visa extension.

Now by questions:

  • Will I be asked how I will intend on supporting myself for 6 months when speaking to the guy at the airport border control and will "my fiance will be taking care of us" be acceptable?
  • Will I be asked how I will intend on supporting myself for the following 6 months when requesting the extra 6 months tourist visa and will "my fiance will be taking care of us" be acceptable?
  • As the sponsee of the family spousal application, will our application for my PR status be refused or scrutinized because of my lack of funds?

I want the make it clear that I do not intend on claiming welfare in any capacity, and will be leading a very meager lifestyle on approx. $400 so very little burden to my partner's finances until I can work when my PR status is approved.

I thank you in advance for any info.

Hey,

*at the border, you should be fine. I was in the same situation, without a return ticket, but a print of my bank account to show that I could buy a ticket if needed. there is always a risk for extra scrutiny, but in general, yes, it's an acceptable answer. If your spouse is traveling with you, let her do the talking. I doubt that you will be asked many questions though.
*yes, that's acceptable for an extension. As you're not allowed to work until your PR is approved, it's the most logical answer, and the case for lots of people.
*no. The sponsor has to prove that she has a way to support you and herself, but since she has a job, that won't be an issue. THe fact that you don't have a job, or funds for that matter, won't have any bearing on your application, and will certainly no get you a denial. They only deny a PR for medical reasons, criminal admissibility, or non genuine relationship. If none of them apply to you, you should be fine.

I imagine you will be going through London - there is a UK thread, with plenty of people in your case (waiting in Canada with their spouse, while unemployed and bored to death! :-) ) so feel free to join - it also makes it easier to understand how London is working, and the timeline. 1 month currently for stage 1, and I would say 5 months for stage 2 if you have a straightforward case. the spreadsheet is attached to my signature if you want to have a look.

Good luck,
Sweden
