Do I need another medical exam?

This may be a silly question, but according to the CIC website, it is stated "If you apply to:

Immigrate to Canada, you must have a medical exam before you come to Canada.
Come to Canada as a visitor, student or worker, you may need a medical exam."

I came to Canada already, on a temporary foreign work permit. I was working with kids, so I needed a medical exam. This was done in May of 2013. Since that, I have chosen to apply for PR (common law) - I'm already living in Canada. So do I need another one?

It just seems pointless if I've already been cleared once to be getting more xrays and potential exposure from that.

So, my question is, would I actually be required to have another since they're only good for a year? Or is the fact that I am still in Canada meaning that I'm okay?

I'm going under the assumption that I will need another, but just curious to hear from others.

You shouldn't be concerned about the extra radiation from a single round of chest xrays (front and side). It is equivalent to 6 days of exposure in Canada or the US, and only twice your exposure to fly round trip to Europe. Statistically, you are more likely to be struck by lightning than have cancer caused by medical x-rays.

In the last two years, you could "easily" have manifested a medically disbarring illness.

My spouse is in the same situation. Her last medical was done on 24 July 2013 and she is just about to apply for extension of visitor status while waiting for her PR application to be processed. I was totally unaware that a yearly medical is needed.
Would someone be so good as to please direct me to where this is stated in the CIC rules that a yearly medical is required.

If you apply for permanent residence, you must have an immigration medical exam. Your dependants must also have a medical exam, even if they are not coming with you.

Your medical exam results are valid for 12 months only. If you do not come to Canada as a permanent resident within that time, you may need to have another exam.

that's a confusing statement. How can someone have a medical here in Canada if they don't come to Canada?
My spouse's case is an in-Canada application and I'm not convinced the 1 yr validity period applies to in-Canada applications.

Well...It certainly does.

Medical exams for Family Class sponsored applicants are only valid for 1 year. It matters not if they are `in Canada' or not.


To answer your question, until a person has their PR they are only seen as a visitor to Canada. This is why the statement is a bit confusing.

An annual medical exam is not required.

Once the immigration medical exam has been completed, the results are only valid for 1 year. If the sponsorship application goes beyond 1 year (processing) CIC can either extend the medical, or ask for a second exam. It really depends on the visa officer and his/her discretion.
