Hi everybody! I have a situation and am wondering if anyone can help out with information. I am Canadian citizen. I married a Thai woman in in bangkok in 2009 and filed an application to sponsor her. Before any decision could be made on the application, our relationship ended because of her greed and lies. Anyway I went over to Thailand last year November and we got divorced. Consequently I withdrew my application. Since I was very short of time while i was there, I left the divorce certificate with her, so she could have it translated and attested and send it over to me by mail. The situation now is that she has disappeared and I cannot find her. The concern now I have is that if I do marry again with someone else, would I need the divorce certificate for that. This of course in the context of myself sponsoring someone else, as I am planning to get married again this year in October. Thanks in advance for your help.

Yes, you need Original Divorce Certificate issued by that country (under their law) in which marriage has been performed (in your case Thailand).

You cannot get married again without producing the original divorce certificate.

And how do you divorce someone for "greed and lies" and then entrust them with the responsibility of seeing to it that the severance of your relationship is properly finalized???

Thanks for your help. It was stupid of me and now I will have to pay for it by going back to Thailand and getting a duplicate one.

I m agree with Charlie. You should not leave it to her in Thailand. You Should have it translated yourself.

One more thing I don't understand here, like why the DC was not in English. As far my knowledge goes, every country nowadays issue Marriage and Divorce Certificate in both English and their local language. Please make it clear here.

anyway, you must request for duplicate now. Also, write explanation why you could not provide original one, if it is marked "" Duplicate " in your DC.

DC is a must to get remarried. There is also another thing you should know that if you plan to marry inside Canada, you need to apply for marriage license to go for another marriage. If outside Canada, your marriage will be recognized if marriage in that country is legal.
