Hello everyone,

I'm an immigrant myself, currently working at Skills Ontario, where we promote careers in the skilled trades and technologies as first-choice career options.

I'm exited and proud to announce about an event dedicated to newcomers where we would like to engage them through an all-day event - Virtual Trades & Tech Discovery Day for New Canadians. In this event one can learn about skilled trade and technology careers, build network, and explore opportunities!

Are you skilled worker or someone who wants to get into skilled trades in Canada? If yes please join us!

Event details:
Date: 26th August 2021
Time: 9:30 AM - 4:30 PM (EST)
Venue: Virtual
Fee: Free
Registration: https://skillsddnc.vfairs.ca/

The purpose of this event is to encourage and educate newcomers regarding the available skilled trades in Ontario and how they can get training / equivalency (if they were already working in similar trades back in their country of origin).

The event will be presented virtually using the Vfairs platform which uses Zoom as the presentation medium. This event will help promote careers in skilled trades and technologies to new Canadians that may aspire to these rewarding and lucrative careers. It will feature panel discussions with mentors and educators who will share their experience, challenges, opportunities and pathways to skilled trades and tech careers.

If you have any questions fell free to reach out to me at pteki@skillsontario.com

Hope to see you virtually at the Virtual Trades & Tech Discovery Day for New Canadians.

Are you going to have information about getting specific licensing for example, welder certification or an electrician certification?

Hello Safia, thank you for reaching out. Its a great question, at the virtual event you will find many organizations who help newcomers with getting their licenses and equivalency for their prior experience.

For the welder certification you can get in touch with 'Canadian welding Bureau (CWB)' at the event and they can guide you and as for the Electrician certificate I would suggest to meet the colleges as they have a lot of courses for newcomers in skilled trades which further helps with certification, lastly if you have prior experience in one of the trades (welding or electrical) then you should visit the employment agencies (present the event) as they have bridging programs which helps in getting certifications quickly if you have prior experience.

Hope this helps.

Don't forget to register yourself for this Discovery Day to learn more about skilled trades in Ontario. You can register at https://skillsddnc.vfairs.ca/

What other activities will be happening at the event?
Hi Safia, Thanks for showing interest in this event. I hope you have already registered :) .

There will be many activities happening at the event to engage the audience, Trivia questions are one of them, the winner of the trivia question will win exiting prizes from Milwaukee tool and 3M. So, I would suggest to keep your eyes open at the event to complete the Trivia questions and win these exiting prizes (these tools are best friend for people in trades).

According to me the most engaging activity at the event will be the mentor panel session where you will get to know the first hand experience of the mentors, why did they choose that particular trade, who helped them in their journey, what struggles did they face, what would they suggest a newcomer who wants to get into a similar trade as themselves. Also, you can ask them questions at the end of the panel session or at a booth if they are representing any organization, college or employer.

It will be a exiting event, more like an get together where one can learn and network with the various organizations, employers and colleges who are helping with skilled trade activities such as training, equivalency and jobs.

Hope to see you there.
