Hello, I have a question regarding the sponsorship of my wife to live in Canada. Are we required to list our son as a dependent on form IM0008DEP? Does he have to take the medical? I have found some information stating that Canadian citizens, which my son most certainly is, are not required to submit these documents. But, every guide that I read states that all dependent children of the principle applicant, my wife, need to undergo these processes. It seems a matter of common sense, but I would be kicking myself if going on a whim got our application rejected. Any help would be most appreciated.
Cheers,
Gareth

PS: If a dependent Canadian child is not required to complete IM0008DEP or the medical, can IM0008DEP be dropped from the application?

If your child is a Canadian citizen, he/she is NOT considered a dependent for the purposes of immigration. A dependent child would be if you were sponsoring your wife and a child, where the child is not a Canadian citizen. In that situation, you'd need to complete the IMM0008 and click the 'add dependents' button. IMM0008DEP is if you have 5 or more dependents. If you were to list your son as a dependent, you'd also be sponsoring him for permanent residence to Canada, which is impossible since he is already a citizen.

I'm in a similar situation as you, but rest assured, you simply fill out IMM0008 with your wife's info (and yours where it asks about your wife's spouse). Other than that, sign, date, and you're good to go.

IMM0008DEP is not applicable for you, so yes, you don't need to include it. That said, you should make an appendix for the document checklist and list the IMM forms you are not including (e.g. IMM0008DEP - not applicable).

I know how you feel, as the word 'dependent' is somewhat confusing. I also thought that our son would be considered a dependent, because he IS dependent on us, but not for the purposes of a spousal application and certainly not for IMM0008. The only form where you will need to list your child is (I think...I can't remember exactly), IMM5406 (principal applicant form) and IMM5481 (sponsor form).

CIC has done a great job of making things as confusing as possible. I appreciate that, and hope they will also be paying for my hair transplant (only half joking!) :P

Hi Fencesitter, thanks for your reply and clarification! I think I understand it a bit more now but - yes, as usual, CIC has made this a unnecessarily hazy and complicated debacle. Wouldn't it be great if there was an appropriate form, or package, provided for each type of application rather than large general checklist directing you to go forth and select the appropriate barrage of pdf files from the CIC stockpile? Ah well, perhaps this will be the next revision after the parent/grandparent visas are dealt with.
Cheers,
Gareth
