Cruise ship love

My boyfriend (english) and I met on a cruise ship last year (crew members). We are just finishing our final contract in June and I would like to sponsor him to Canada as my conjugal partner. The issue is my income is paid in cash so it looks like I have no income. When I go home from vacation I do have a full time job from McDonald's waiting for me. I was thinking of asking them for a letter saying that. Also in the proof of relationship section it asks for proof of financial support and dependency such as join bank accounts and joint ownership of assets but I don't think we have that. We pay for things together like flights or food but that's it for now. And they ask for a written statement asking why we aren't married or loving together but we wanted to be in the same country before we got married and obviously can't live together due to different countries.
Any advice and help would be great as I'm super stressed and confused!
Thanks :)

In order to sponsor as conjugal there has to be barriers preventing you from being together. You will have to either live with him for a year consecutively or marry him.

Yep - agreed with the above. You don't meet the requirements for conjugal. You'll need to either get married or live together continuously for a year to become common law before you'll be able to sponsor him.

But we can't live together because of immigration? If we get married do we need to live together for a year as well?

No you dont need to live together as well if youre married. I would do some research on canada immigration before making any decisions. You are responsible for this man as well for some time should he be approved

But he would need a visa to work there or stay longer then 6 months ?
In order to work in canada yes he needs a work permit. If he comes as a visitor on a tourisr visa he cannot work but you can apply to extend his stay.

I have done a lot of research but a lot of it is very confusing.
If we did common law he could stay in Canada for 6 months and then I would apply to extend it? And would we need our own place or could we stay with my parents?
If we got married we could do the spouse but he would not need to live in Canada?
Sorry for all the questions just confusing.

If you get married and apply "outland" you can go home to Canada and he can go back to his country while you wait for the visa. Alternately you and he can come to Canada, get married while he's on a eTA and apply either inland or outland. If you apply inland he can stay in Canada while you wait for the visa to be granted and he can apply for a work permit while you wait.
