Hi,

I have heard from some people that they have included a covering letter along with their application though not mandated by consulate. I am planning to include the below details in my letter while applying. Please advise if any other information should be included too.

1) Salutations etc
2) Introduction
a) My name and dependent's info (briefly)
b) Status in Canada
c) Brief job description
3) Purpose
c) Intention to immigrate
d) Category in which applying
4) Contact details
a) Phone number and address for correspondence

I wouldn't do this. All the details you're thinking of including are already in the forms, and the cover letter makes more work for you and more work for CIC. Imagine you're a visa officer who's going through a giant pile of mail. Would you want to get an extra piece of paper to read and throw away (because it provides no information that isn't already on the forms, which they have to look at anyway)? The only cover letter I can think of that might actually be helpful would be one that said nothing but "Application for permanent residence - CEC", because that would help them sort it into the right pile.
 
Covering letter not required.

If you do nothave any documents that are requested in the checklist, then highlighting them in the covering letter and providing a justification will add a clarification to VO.
