Hi everyone,

I am a little confused about the 1 year CONTINUOUS work experience requirement. I've worked for 5months as an accountant, but than I allowed a gap of 4 months, when I wasn't working because I had to go to school. Do I have to start all over and work another 12 months in order to satisfy the 12 months requirement, or do I just need another 7 months? I've also worked as a research assistant for about 15 months - does this count?

Thanks

The basic requirement to be able to apply for skilled worker at all is to have 1 year continuous experience in a skilled job, no break allowed. Your job as a research assistant could qualify for that.

Another requirement to be able to apply is to fit one of the 3 categories for skilled worker. If you are wanting to apply under category 1 as an accountant, you need to have 1 year of continuous experience as an accountant so in that case, yes, you would have to start again and work for 12 months before you can apply.

If you are applying under category 2 (job offer) or 3 (already in Canada for 12 months), then it does not matter.

research/teaching assistant is not in 38 NOC.

thanks for all the replies; I don't know if it makes a difference, but I was a research assistant in a Business Consulting office (not a teaching assistant)

It's still a skilled job and still not on the list of 38 so it will give you the basis to apply as a skilled worker but you still need a category. If you have no job offer and haven't been in Canada for 12 months immediately before you apply, you need a 1 year continuous experience in a job on the 38 list.
