It's been 8 months since I have received my AIP. Does contacting the local MP really help speed up the process?

No, they can just help you get information, not speed up the process.

No, it definitely will not. They do not interfere with other gov't offices. They can only get information (some) for you but cannot answer questions like how much longer the visa will take. They can tell you whether certain documents have been received by the VO, if you still need to submit other documents, whether you need to go for an interview etc...
