Hey guys, i need your inputs and sincere advice.
I and my boyfriend have been dating for a year now, i live in a country where being gay is illegal and carries imprisonment term in western Africa. My boyfriend also is from a country that is highly homophobic. Although he lives in canada and has a PR. Considering how highly homophobic my country is and incident of how hotels put cameras in their room to spot gay couples and then carry out mob attacks on them, my boyfriend is extremely scared to visit my country. However, there is several proof of emails, messages and call to prove our relationship. Also, proof of him sending me money too is included.
We have decided to apply for conjugal sponsorship please what are our chances of being approved? Note that we haven't met in person yet. Thank you as i await your response.

You've never met in person at all?

Have you tried to apply for a tourist visa to Canada?

Generally, you need to have a legal (or persecution) barrier to living together and an immigration barrier; if you've never applied to visit Canada, you may well be denied.

Your bigger issue is that you've never met in person. That will raise some red flags.

You have to demonstrate beyond reasonable doubt, that there is a significant degree of attachment between the two of you, financially, socially, emotionally and physically. You have to proof that you've made attempt to unite either by applying for visitor visa for the purpose of getting married, except where it's not possible. Above all, you must be ready to prove that there's high chances of persecution that will not allow you to live together. Your relationship need to be like a marriage type, even when not married.

Wow... thank you for this, although my partner already spoke with an immigration lawyer and according to him, the lawyer said we have a good chance considering that our both country are homophobic. Is there still need to apply for TRV?

You don't have a good chance. As you've never met in person, expect a refusal regardless.

You need to actually meet, whether that be in your country or somewhere else.

And yes, you need to apply for a TRV. If you are approved, you can either marry or become common-law in Canada.

There's zero chance of approval if you've never met in person.

Since you've hired a lawyer, then follow his/her advice. Best of luck!

Okay... we actually have plans of meeting this year summer. Can we continue our application and update immigration with photos of us?

No. You need to meet in person before you file your application. If you apply before you've met in person, ti's going to end in refusal.

I would find a new lawyer. Your lawyer is giving you very poor advice.

No. You need to actually need to meet before applying.

There is a chance that IRCC will approve your eligibility though you have not met in person but it might be slim. Per the one of the forms, you will have to write a letter to them and explain why you have not visited each other even once. It might be hard to prove the genuineness of your relationship though.
