I know that in order to enter Canada from the border with the United States, one needs to be tested within 72 hours of entry. But I also understand that many border crossings conduct testing on site. Is the test taken at the border sufficient, or is it necessary to get tested at a clinic in the US, get tested again at the border, and get tested again on day 8?

You need a PCRwithin 72 hours from reaching the land border and then you can be given another test at the border.
