Confused on submission of PR application while WP is in process

Hi

I have been working in Canada for past 3 years on work permit. Work permit will be expiring in the month of September, 2012. I have also gathered all required documents and prepared application for PR under CEC.

My company will be applying for extension of WP in the month of may, so can I submit application for PR while WP extension is in progress?
