Hi All,

I have recently been issued my confirmation of permanent residence which will expire on 12th March 2018.

At present I am unable to leave the UK (current citizen of the UK) as I am still to finalise the sale of my house amongst other things.

Would it be possible fly to Canada before the validity date of my COPR and then fly back after a short stay before my COPR expires on 12th March 2018?

This will allow the initiation of the process of creating the permanent resident cards. Once the sale of my house has been completed I will then fly back to Canada with my permanent resident cards.

Would this be possible?

Any help would be sincerely appreciated.

Kind regards,
Avtar

Hi

Yes, you can do that.

Hi Canuck_in_uk,

Thank you for your prompt response.

Further to the above, I understand that the new permanent resident cards take 61 days to process, if I was to leave Canada to return to the UK before receiving the permanent resident cards would I be allowed re-entry without the permanent resident cards?

I hold a visa exempt passport or would that not matter as I would be classed as a permanent resident and would require the permanent resident cards in order to re-enter Canada?

If you have family or friends in Canada, you can have your PR card sent there and they can mail it on to you in the UK.

Otherwise, to come to Canada without a PR card, you would need to apply for a PRTD or fly to the US and cross by land in a private vehicle or on foot. Having a visa-exempt passport doesn't matter because you would still require an eTA to board a plane to Canada, which PRs do not qualify for.
