Hey Guys,
I did my Bachelor's in Electronics and communication eng. from India and I came to Canada on a Study permit in 2016 and was enrolled in Robotics and Automation program which was based on the mechanical and electrical engineering field. Well, the program was highly based on PLC programming and C coding so I was able to get a good score but the job market was not much related to the field as every company I visited was looking for someone with either electrical or mechanical engineering background and as a result, I couldn't get a field job. however, I was able to get my permanent residency.
Now, I have got admission to a Mobile solution development program in the same college with optional co-op as a domestic student and I am quite confident, it will be a good match for me but how much it is related to the Canadian job market as I had a very harsh experience in the past and I don't want to repeat it again. of course, I have a PR now but I don't want to get into more mess.
I don't have any job experience in this field and that is the biggest concern for me. Is my past study and work experience going to make any wrong impression on the Canadian employers as I am changing the field?

Thanks.

Hi there,
First Off I am having difficulty understanding that you have not been able to find job as Robotics/Controls/Automation Engineer....PLC programing is just a part of it and its a VERY valuable skill. Infact its the only kind of "Programing" skill that is not directly related to IT but still pays well. If your first study program had a Coop then it should have given you edge.... About me, I am in Canada currently as PhD student and I do have automation experience from US in past 3 years. I have been contacted by recruiters asking my availability but I am on study permit and can't be available full time.... This has made me change my mind about my current course of action and as of now, I have secured a seat in the Mobile Solution Development program in Conestoga (Yes I am going to change my institute as well as field) Since my PhD may go as far as 2023 and I am losing points every year due to my age. So i need to get "Some" degree as soon as possible so I could get my PGWP and be able to take a full time job.
I am also inclined towards this course because after working in field of robotics I dont want to waste $25K international student fee on studying PLC and robotics since I know 90% of it from my work experience. I would rather like to augment my knowledge and get in to Tech field so It could broaden my job prospects especially in these unusual times of virus and unemployment. Again I don't have any past experience as web-developer but as You and I both are PLC programers and as they say "Once a coder is always a Coder". I do have passion for tech-solutions though and I am sure you'd be fine too.

Having said that, Presumably you started the course in Jan 2020 right?! how's it going? What's your gut feeling about this path
take care and best regards
Kashi
