We recently fired our immigration consultant and CIC isn't much help, they just say the application is in process...hopefully someone can shed some light...here are the details...

May 9/11-submitted inland spousal sponsorship app
Mar 17/12-app transferred to local office
July 5/12-interview at local office, all went well
Sept 5/12-received letter requesting pymt of $490
Oct 1/12-received receipt for pymt

To date have not had any further communication. Called CIC just before xmas, not very helpful and couldn't tell us the waiting time from when $$ is paid to when PR card is received.

Also...
Work permit is set to expire in March. Do we have to reapply and pay even though we are in the final stages of the PR application??

Did you let CIC know about that you fired your consultant? Otherwise he'll still receive your correspondence from CIC.

Also, there's no point calling CIC since the amount of information they're allowed to release over the phone is minimal (for privacy reasons). Have you tried emailing them for an update?

Yes, we notified CIC about our consultant. Filled in the appropriate form etc.
