Hey all,

My spouse is trying to immigrate to Canada from the US. We have an immigration lawyer, and he instructed us to wait until requested to get an FBI Criminal Record Check. The time has now come, which leads me to my question.

Basically, the FBI's website says it takes 14-16 weeks for a record check to come back. Is this normal? On their website they say that it's impossible to expedite the process and I'm curious if there is truth to this. We live in Vancouver B.C. and I'm curious if there is some way to get the record check faster?

If we have to wait another 14-16 weeks for their work permit to clear it would be extremely frustrating.

Thanks in need!

How are you applying? Through family class (spousal sponsorship)? If so, please post your questions in the Family Sponsorship section of the forum. You'll get the most comprehensive answers there.

Check here to see if you qualify to use a FBI channeler. Turnaround times are 1-3 weeks. My wife used the approved channeler "MyFBIreport".

Also, like mentioned above, if you are sponsoring your wife then you can check out this subforum

If you are US citizen or PR, you can apply through channelers service and you should get PCC in 2-3 weeks.

From 1st Feb, FBI is planning to launch electronic ordering system eDO, details are not out yet but they say that it will expedite the process. As per current system everyone has to send paper based applications, FBI's staff would open each packet, type/scan information and scan the fingerprints, add to that they work in 8-5 shift. Hence the process is slow. If everything can be submitted electronically, then there is no need for human intervention and their computers can keep processing applications 24X7 and hence it should improve the throughput.

If you are non citizen or PR, with current paper based system, yes, it can take 14-16 weeks + days it will take for results to reach you.
