Hi all,

I obtained PR last year (Aug 2024) through the Canadian Experience stream (Express Entry) as the principal applicant, together with my common law partner as a dependent.

Unfortunately, we are now separating and I am worried for my PR status if I sign a lease for a new place without them, effectively losing common law status.
Should I be worried? Are there legal implications or a specific time frame I should be mindful of?
From what I read, the 2year requirement only applied to sponsorships and was revoked back in 2017...
But I am not sure where PR under EE stand in a case like this, and I am super scared of losing my status if we don't live together anymore.
Thank you, and have a great evening!

As long as you were in a legitimate common law relationship and just separated and not soon after receiving PR it shouldn’t be an issue.
