My partner and I was roommates for few years , therefore she submitted his immigration application as a single and he got approved.

We became a couple after she got PR, and now we have been living together more than a year.

- Can I apply my immigration under Common-law portal??
- As we were roommates , we have same mail address for many years. So, we are wondering that its CIC will believe us that we were only roommate or they will consider us as a common-law partner? However, we were just roommates and friends.

Thank you!

Common-law means living together in a marriage like situation. Even though you've lived together as roommates, you can show that you have transitioned into being partners. Provide supporting documents and explanation to prove your genuine relationship.

Keep in mind that sharing the residential address does not mean going into common-law. It is 12 months from when you went into a marriage-like relationship.

The issue will be proving that you are a couple now, where previously you were roommates. You'll need more than a common address.

Do you have shared bank accounts, have you traveled together a couple? How will you prove that you're living in a marriage-like relationship now?

No, we have been together after she got PR , so the account opened after that.

Good, so that will help (assuming it's been a year since you opened it). You'll need that, along with other proof of your relationship. Tickets for vacations together, messages/emails you've exchanged that show you're more than just roommates, proof that you are financially dependent on each other, etc.

Start collecting all that now.
