Hi there,
My name is Sophie and I’m from Germany. I’m in the Yukon for the last three years. My current work permit (international experience Canada/ skilled workers) is about to expire on November 29th. My employer and me we would like to extend it but apparently I cant extend the IEC for another year because I’m from Germany. So I thought I could extend my stay by getting a closed work permit not under ICE with an offer of employment. Unfortunately my employer doesn’t have a Lima because she didn’t need one for my current permit. It was exempt because of ICE. I’m a little bit worried and confused by what I should do now. Is there any option that I won’t loose my implied status and can continue working?
Getting a LIMA takes a while and I’m not sure if I can apply without that.

Help would be really appreciated! Thanks so much!

Your job was only exempt from a LMIA because you a open work permit under the IEC. Moving forward if the employer want to keep you , you need to have them apply for a LMIA to see if any Canadian can do the job before offering it too a foreign national . It would be a closed work permit valid for only that employer. Once your work permit expires , you must stop working. You would request to change your status from a worker to a visitor and must maintain valid status
LMIA cost $$$$, and time

Thanks for the response. I read something on the Cic website that you can apply without the LIMA and give proof afterwards. Any experience with that?
And also I found an exemption code for LIMA called “implied status”. Does anyone know something more about that? It’s, like always, not very clear on their website.
cheers
