Closed work permit and marriage

Hello all,

Question regarding closed work permit and open work permit.

I am currently employed in Toronto, and my employer has issued me with a closed work permit which is valid until 2019. I am currently into my 1.5 year out of the total 4.
However, I have recently gotten married and my wife is Canadian.
I would like to be able to explore new job opportunities and as far as I understand, I need an open work permit for this.
I guess the real question is whether this is possible? I know that a new visa needs to be issued, but how would that work if I'm already eligible to work, just under restricted conditions of a closed work permit?

Thanks a lot

Now when you are married to a Canadian Citizen, You can apply for a Canadian PR and in the mean time you can apply for a Open Work Permit....I read it on CIC, look up on CIC's website, Cant find the link right now...

Only if the spouse is sponsored inland - not outland. Also, it takes four months for the OWP to be approved. In many cases it is a far better idea to apply outland.

Hey Scylla, Thanks for building on it, However as per OP's comment he is in Toronto. So he will be Inland.

Actually - no. Even if you are physically in Canada - you can apply outland. That's what many of us here have done (myself included).

Again, depending on the OP's country of origin - applying outland may be the far better choice.

Move over to the Family Sponsorship section of the forum. You will get the best advice there. I don't know the current processing times through Tel Aviv (don't rely on what's posted on the CIC web site). However I'm sure someone in the Family Sponsorship section will be able to tell you. This will help to determine if applying inland or outland is the better option. Inland comes with the OWP but can take two years during which time you're not supposed to leave Canada. Inland typically takes far less time - but comes with no OWP. That's the choice you'll likely face.

Thanks, but you've mentioned that Inland both comes with OWP and without OWP. is the latter a typo?
AFAIK inland comes WITH OWP.
