Hello! I’m a healthcare worker in Canada with a closed work permit for the hospital I work for. I was recently presented with the opportunity to do some consulting work on a part time contractor basis for a UK company. The company has no Canadian presence and no Canadian clients. They would be paying me to my US bank account as a 1099 contractor in the US (where I’m still a citizen).

Is this situation permitted on a closed work permit since it is unrelated to the Canadian labor market? I understand there would be tax implications and am already planning to consult with a cross border tax accountant since my spouse and I were paid in 2 countries this year. It’s a great opportunity and I’d love to take it since I took a substantial pay cut to move here and it has the opportunity to turn into a full time role in my dream job after I finish my current contract and have PR. But of course I do not want to jeopardize my legal status in Canada.

I only work 4 days a week in my current role so I would be doing this on my own time outside of my closed work permit work.
