Hi guys

I hope there's someone that can help me. I am already in Canada on a work permit, working in Toronto for a steel fabricator as a structural technologist. I got my degree and experience from the UK, over 4 years in total, the problem is that my first position was as a structural technician for about 1 year and then I became a structural engineer. It's a natural step in the UK, you start as a technician and work with experienced engineers, then you become more experienced and switch to engineering positon. It's just a job title because even as a technician I was responsible for design and calcs. Same is in Canada, if you don't have your PEng license you can't even say you're an engineer, it's illegal and you can be fined up to $5000. The problem is that both occupations have different NOC codes, NOC 2231 and 2131. CIC clearly states that the experience should be within one occupation but in theory those occupations are different (only in theory in my case).

I'm registerd with PEO and APEGA as EIT in Canada but I would prefer to claim my exerience as a technologist (it's less paperwork as it's not regulated occupation).

I'm just about to request my employers to send me reference letters, can someone advise how I should get this sorted? Is that a problem if I claim my expereince under those two? Even the job bank says these occupations are related to each other but I wanted to make sure just in case... anyone with similar expereince?

CIC cares only about job duties. Titles and registrations aren't a big deal as long as it's not regulated like engineers and doctors. (As you mentioned technologists are not regulated, and A.Sc.T. title is optional)

My studies and professional registration with APEGS are both closer to mechanical engineer NOC 2132. But my job duties are closer to Technologist so I declared NOC 2232 (Mech Eng Technologist) and supported by job reference letter. And now I got nominated by Sask and PNP Work permit.

Ok thanks a lot. What about the business card? One of my employers didnt have business cards, for sure. What should I do?

Doesn't matter.

Ask your employer to provide you a letter in company letterhead and provide their contact. CIC may contact them to verify what you've declared.
