Do we actually have to live through 5 years minimum in order top be eligible for citizenship or do we just calculate the total days (three years) and apply. Been here in Canada since Sep 2014.

Should really have posted in the citizenship section but anyway from October 11 you need to show 3 years physical presence in Canada in the 5 years prior to the date of your application.

This can include time prior to becoming a PR at a rate of half a day for each day adding a year max to qualifying period as long as still within the previous 5 years. So someone for example could in the previous 5 years have 2 years since becoming PR and 2 years pre PR at half day per day to accumulate the 3 years.

In your example if you have been in Canada as a PR since Sept 2014 then you could qualify post OCT 11 when new rules become effective, assuming you have never left the country since Sept 2014
