My husband (US born after 1977) is applying to become Canadian through his father.
His father and grandparents were naturalized in 1975. The thing is we don't have all the exact dates and details of the family travels before and after that (they did stay in Canada several years) My questions would be:
1) In section 8, "Did the parent (father) leave Canada before 1977", are they asking if he'd lived anywhere else before then? If so I would have to list his birth place etc
or once he had moved to Canada in 75, did he leave before 1977?
2) Grandparents info is spotty and his aunt dug up passports and citizenship certificates, however, I am not sure which one exactly is the Canadian Certificate Number they are requesting.
Can we write the passport number and one of the numbers on the citizenship certificate and write "see attached" and attach (regular non-certified) copies of those documents? Would that be ok?
3) We have his father's Canadian citizenship card. Is it safe to assume his Canadian certificate number is the number listed on the card?

One last question is, would my husband be able to make our daughter Canadian given he gets his Citizenship certificate?
Thank you all in advance :)

  1. You have to list everywhere your husband's father lived before 1977 before he came to Canada.
  2. You would only write in the number located on the citizenship certificate; the number in the passport is not the citizenship number.
  3. Yes.
  4. Not by descent as a second generation born abroad. Assuming your daughter is under 18, he will need to move to Canada and apply to sponsor your daughter for permanent residency. Once she becomes a PR, then he can apply for her to be naturalized as a Canadian citizen without needing to fulfill the physical presence requirement. If she is between the age of 18 to 22 and not married, he can still sponsor her, but she will need to fulfill the physical presence requirement for citizenship. If she is older than 22, she can not be sponsored.

Thank you for that detailed reply!
I have a few follow questions if that's ok.
2) What format should I look for for the citizenship number?
Here is the certificate we have, would you know if it's any of the numbers on top right?

2b) if we don't have his grandmother's certificate number, we should just write unknown?

Thank you!

  1. It would be the number listed under [PART - Partie "A"], 1-9x1xx9.
  2. Yes, per the instructions.
