Hi all!

I have a dear friend who also sponsored her husband back in 2009 from USA. She went through a lawyer and now her husband is looking into citizenship. She is wondering, since his PR renewal is coming up and citizenship is quite lengthy, would her husband have to apply for PR renewal before citizenship, or does implied status apply here as well?

My husband just recently landed, so I am clueless but told her I'd ask the experts :)

Thanks!

No he don't have to renew his PR card at all only time he will require a valid PR if he was to travel abroad.

First, his PR status does not expire just because his card expires. There is no need for implied status. If he wants to travel and return to Canada, he will need to renew his PR card. Other than that, he probably wont need one because it's not something that gets asked for too often when you are living in Canada.

Citizenship is a completely different application. He does not need a valid PR card to get citizenship.
