CIC On-Line Services account to pay fees

Hello,

Does anyone know how CIC links an on-line payment to a particular application? I paid the $1,040 CAD amount online and the only information for my account is my e-mail address. How does CIC know that this payment is for my permanent resident application when it's not linked to my name or another number?

You're provided with an e-mailed receipt for your payment which you submit to CIC
