Hoping someone can help.

According to the terms of sponsorship my hubby can't apply for any benefits does this include child tax benefits? As it would seem unfair to me that my hubby can't get help for the child just because Im not Canadian.

Any help?

CCTB is fine, benefits it is referring to is welfare/social assistance.

I get CCTB and was approved.

You must have read the CRA's last bullet on eligibility regarding CCTB:

•you or your spouse or common-law partner must be a Canadian citizen, a permanent resident, a protected person, or a temporary resident who has lived in Canada for the previous 18 months

So even if you're only a temporary resident, the bottom line is you are required to have lived in Canada for the previous 18 months.

Ok I do not want to tell someone the wrong thing.

I just assumed that vechappell meant to sponsor they could not be receiving benefits. Sorry if I was wrong or mixed you up!

Yeah sorry if my post was unclear.

My husband is Canadian, and I will have been in Canada for almost 18months when the baby is born.

My concern was my husband isn't allowed certain benefits as it would cancel our immigration application. I was wondering if the child tax benefits were included.

I know I wouldn't be able to claim but was hoping my husband could, as we're not poor but the little extra would definitely help us out as I can't work at the moment, so anything to help with the baby is appreciated.

so does that mean as a returning Canadian with my three Canadian children and my husband who is a new PR we don't qualify for almost 2 years?! When did this get added to the requirements? Last time I talked to Revenue Canada last fall they said we would qualify from day one?!

I also have the same question can i take cild benefits while spousal sponsorship case is in process?

Is it possible they thought you were applying inland?

I am now wondering if it is as we are thinking does that mean the CCTB that I currently receive will be put on hold once my husband lands? I think I will make a call I will let you all know what I find out(if anything).

Can you tell me/us where you read and or got that information?

I am wondering if you are talking about the initial sponsor eligibility? If that is what you are referring to then it is not concidered a benefit. To be sure though, let me/us know where you got the information please

WHOA! Hold up folks! The entire eligibility list is here:

http://www.cra-arc.gc.ca/bnfts/cctb/fq_qlfyng-eng.html

But notice even in the one bullet previously posted, it says "you OR your spouse . . . ". Think you are ALL going to be fine. A CRA agent once told me, "apply for EVERYTHING and let the system determine your are not eligible if that is the case."

It was on his application to sponsor pack and was also on the letter they sent out stating that he is responsible for me for 3 years after I get residency and that no benefits can be claimed within this time but it doesn't state what kind of benefits.

yeah reading it again it seems to me that the 18 months wait time is just for the temporary residents "or a temporary resident who has lived in Canada for the previous 18 months" I'm hoping that that is the case! I might have to call them again and make sure that is what it means!

Yes, that's exactly how I read it too.

@ vechappell - sounds to me like they're referring to 'welfare' benefits... just my speculation
