Pre-Assessed..
I'm so frustrated right now. I'm a Canadian citizen (born in Canada), and had a child while living in the United States. We're living in Canada now, and I'm working on his application for citizenship (CIT 0003 - he's only 5), but have hit a roadblock.

I have all the necessary documents with the exception of a Canadian immigration record. We flew home, and we weren't given anything. I explained to the officer that my son is a US citizen and that I'd be applying for Canadian citizenship for him. There isn't even a stamp in his passport.

Does anyone know how I am supposed to go about getting him IMM 1000 or IMM 5292, as requested on the document checklist? I read that they don't give out IMM 1000 anymore. I don't want to send in an incomplete application, only to have it returned to me.

I'd post links to the appropriate pages on the CIC website, but since I'm new I can't post links.

I didn't have to file the form that you're looking for but if you are a Canadian citizen then he is a citizen by default. My son is born in America to a Canadian father and all we needed were all or our birth certificates and the original application. His citizenship card is in the mail as we speak. I have a direct number of someone helpful in the Seattle Consulate if you are going through that office. Let me know.

Your son would never have received the document you are talking about because he is a Canadian citizen as well. You need to apply for a Citizenship Certificate.

The appropriate application forms and Guide are here:

rjessome is correct... you only need to apply for the Citizenship Certificate because the child is a Canadian Citizen by birth....

Thanks everyone. I've tried calling CIC dozens of times, but either can't get through, or I get cut off after being on hold for an hour. It is surprisingly difficult to find this information!

Now, I'll be able to move forward with this.

Does anyone know how long it takes?

The people who wrote expedite on their applications got them in *literally* weeks.... I did not write expedite and am currently in month 5 of a 10+ process.

Write expedite and you should be able to get it done fast

It takes anywhere from 6-10 months but I was able to call the consulate in Seattle and put a RUSH on it when my immigration was moving faster than expected and then it took them ONE day to process it and it's in the mail as we speak. Crazy how fast they can work when they really need to. Like I said, if you're going through Seattle, I have an inside line and she is WONDERFUL! If you're going through a different consulate try writing rush or expedite and hopefully that will speed things up for sure.

I'm already in Canada, so I don't know if the Consulate will be able to help me.

Does it cost more to put a rush on it?

Note the OP is in Canada, so they are not going to expedite.
