Job Offer........
Pre-Assessed..
My wife is giving birth in 1 month and I ma going back to VietNam, from what I know my child will be automatically a Canadian citizen and all I need to do is go to the Canadian embassy in VietNam and filled out the form right?

Anyone know if this fact is correct? or do I actually need to do DNA test before my child can become a Canadian citizen.

Note: My dad came to Canada and sponsored my family over and I was granted my citizenship back when I was a child.

You are right, your child is entitled to citizenship through you. I doubt they will ask for a DNA test since you are married but you never know. You fill out the forms at the embassy or fill them out here: http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/information/applications/certif.asp and mail them to the embassy. The processing time is around 9 months. If you want to return to Canada earlier than that, you can get a temporary passport from the embassy for your child.

You have to check first if the canadian gov't is adapting a jus sanguinis or jus soli.
If jus soli then I think your child can have a dual citizenship.

Canada does allow dual and a child of a Canadian born abroad is also Canadian unless the child is the 2nd generation born abroad, that means if the parent was not born in Canada and gained citizenship because the parents were Canadian at the time he was born. I don't know however if VietNam allows dual.

Hi Trung,

Which Part of Vietnam? Ho Chi minh or Ha Noi?

I am in the same situation...I'm a Canadian citizen, but I have a green card for the US. My son (15) was born in the US and has lived here all his life. He now wants to get his Canadian citizenship and passport(and be a dual citizen). At the moment he still lives in the US, but on most of the forms I've looked at, they all ask for his PR address in Canada. What do we do here? He will finish high school in the US, so will live in the US for 3 more years. Any ideas? Is residence in Canada a prerequisite for citizenship?

If you were a Canadian citizen at the time of his birth, then you are looking at the wrong form. You need proof of citizenship for him. http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/citizenship/proof.asp
