Changing to visitor status

Hi im coming to the end of my work permit on the IEC and i'm going to stay on as a visitor and travel. I've worked out how to apply online however im not to sure how the process works Ive seen people say they have to sen doff their passport to get the stamp. if you do this does this mean you don't have to go to the boarder to change to your visitor status. i want to knwo as the day my work permit run out im meant to be in Whistler for a friends wedding so would really like to avoid missing it for a trip to the boarder.
