Changing from NAFTA to Open Work Permit?

Hi there,

I am sponsoring my husband (American) for PR (I'm Canadian). He's at the stage where he's had his medical exam, so pretty far along. He currently has a NAFTA work permit, but wants to quit his job and look for other work while he waits for PR. I'm assuming he could simply apply to change his work permit status from his current NAFTA one to an Open Work Permit and it should be a non-issue, but I wanted to double check. Any thoughts?
