Change of passport after student visa approval

I got a letter telling me to submit my passport. One of the conditions is for the passport to be valid for the duration of the program. My passport expires in January 2020 and will not cover the duration of my stay.

I can get a new passport within a week. Is it allowed to submit a new passport other than the one used in submitting my application after an application has been approved? If yes what is the procedure for updating my passport number.
