Hi! All,

I landed in Canada on 18th Aug,2012 which was a sat day. Started work from 20th Aug,2012. It is a 40 hour working week. So I am assuming I can apply for PR on 20th Aug,2013. Is my understanding correct or does CIC have a different way of calculating one year experience in Canada?

Thanks

No problem. And just to be on the safe side, give yourself at least a couple work week leeway before you apply.

The officers can be extremely picky when it comes to the amount of hours and weeks towards the 12 months experience. As it is calculated on 37.5 hours a week so to be on the safe side I would make it like 1.1 - 1.5 years experience so your covered.

Oh ok.

Just curious..would it be a cause of rejection if I apply exactly after finishing one year?
No, a full year is a full year. But why bother? Wait a week, then apply.

I would request you to calculate your whole working hours including paid vacations and excluding non-paid vacations, holidays and sick leave days...if it totals 37.5*52Weeks= 1950hrs than you are good to go..hope this help...Good Luck..

Arhaan, its not 37.5 hours anymore. That was last year's requirement. Since Jan 2013, they have redefined the working hour requirement to 30 hours/week.

So.............. its 30 hrs/week * 52 weeks = 1560 hrs

CIC doesn't go by hours unless you are working part-time (fewer than 30 hours per week), at which point it will take you more than a year to qualify. No matter what, you have to work a full year (52 weeks) at full-time (no matter whether it's 30 hours per week or 80).

Well, not really, but think of it this way. Your Letter of Employment must cover your entire period of eligibility - the letter must be dated, and nothing after the date on the letter will count. So unless you have one of those rare employers who can instantly provide this letter, logically you won't be able to apply exactly on the same date.

Basically, many people have been refused for jumping the gun and miscalculating hours, having the letters written too soon, etc - with the result of CIC calculating their work experience differently than they expected, and coming up short on the employment requirement. It's usually worth waiting a couple of weeks before applying, just to give yourself a little wiggle room.
