Doh! I just learned tonight that the kids carseats(bought 2 months ago!) in the US that we'd be bringing with us and dh already did bring 2 brand new ones ealrlier this month.... are likely illegal to use.

There is $200 to just throw in the garbage when we arrive. i can't sell the ones here, they have to be IN carseats for the drive. Dh is coming by train so not sure he can bring the ones back, plus arranging to sell them in the span of the 2 days we have to move out of our house seems unlikely and stressful. And we'll have to buy new ones too, to the tune of at least $150.

Not very happy about this, anyone have experience?
Who would have thought.

No experience, just a question. Did you sell your house??

Normally carseats cannot be imported as the safety regulations between USA and CA is very different when it comes to infant carseats I have tried before and was told by CBSA its illegal as their carseats are not up to our safety standards

Yup ked is right. I tried to purchase one years ago and they gave me a hard time, had to return the whole thing

Wow, that is insane.

What kind of return policy does the store have? If it's a 90 day policy, just return them.

I would love to return them, but my hubby is coming by train to move us back-he took one car over and a few things already as we have 2 cars and the large UHaul for ease and as he started his job. So hauling them around the train station will be crummy, it's why we bought them. I'd originally planned to visit several times till the end of the year, while our house sold. The border said nothing ot him, nor me when I landed and indicated I'd forgotten to put the carseats on my goods to follow. They just put him and I thru. Two different borders.

We will have no choice but to use the ones they have now, until we get to Canada and pick them up very soon after then.

Alison -no :( We had a lady thru this week who was here before, maybe 2 months ago, and her mom maybe just over a month ago. She wants to move back to WI from Mass and has always wanted our house. She was set to make an offer on a house this week but found out HER home sale back in Mass just fell thru - it appraised lower than the sale price. We are hopeful she works things out, but we didn't want to wait any longer.
We are going to double pay for a while, and look at renting perhaps in a few months if it doesn't sell then. We can afford, we think, haha! To pay both, though it'll be an adjustment. We rented a nice 4bd townhouse in London, which will be comfortable for the year we have to stay there and then can hopefully find something then - we will be able to resave our down payment - even if we have to double pay here or take even bigger of a loss. We are now 15-20K under our original appraisal. They re-figured it with a foreclosure for us, and now so, it's dropped - to help us reduce the price to a more competitive area.

Just a thought... Once you get to Canada sell them on eBay my neighbor just sold hers via craigslist and got almost what she paid. Maybe you can recoup something?

Thanks seattle girl, that could work perhaps. We will also be only an hour from Port Huron so maybe CL there and take it on a trip there when we go for our Target fix :)

I'm in Canada waiting for PR and the one thing I miss more than anything (maybe even more than family haha...) is TARGET! Enjoy living close enough to be able to go still! I. Am. Jealous!

There's a bunch of Zellers that will eventually turn into Targets. Just be patient! :P

i dont think they will have the same deals case in point marshalls what a disappointment

Yeah I think it'll be years before we get a Target, for Zellers and the ones I have been to would need to be tore down to replace the feel of Target. dingy, dirty.

Does this mean that (1) Canadians drive more dangerously than Americans do, and therefore higher-standard car seats are necessary to protect precious babies?; or (2) Americans have lower-standard car seats because American babies are less valuable, and their safety doesn't matter as much?; or (3) the Canadian government is more bossy and controlling than its US counterpart?

If you have ever driven near a car with Quebec plates, you would not need to ask this question :)
