Okay,

So here's my issue and hopefully someone can help. We have a lien on our car and have permission from the lienholder to export. That's not the problem.

Everything I've seen says you have to have a certified copy of the title from the DMV. The DMV says that they don't hold the original title in the state, the lien holder does so they can't give me a certified copy.

So...I don't know what to do. All I really can do is get a certified copy from the bank which they say they can do but is that sufficient? I've read elsewhere that it isn't though I can't find that page again.

Does anyone have any experience with this?

I believe the Certificate of Title is all you can have to export your car. Even with permission from the lien holder that title is officially stamped and the car leaves the country, meaning that there is no longer a valid title in the US. Canada will then give you a new title to the car once it has been imported with the RIV.
