Is a Canadian newborn travelling required to have a passport?

I am currently waiting for birth certificate which could take 8 weeks and we are supposed to travel in around 10 weeks which makes getting a passport kind of tricky!

Are we able to take our new born to the USA with just a birth certificate?

We are driving!
