I am looking into applying for PR status in Canada through the Canadian Experience Class (CEC) express entry program. I have been in Canada for a little over 5 years now, 4 years in a full-time undergrad program and ~1 year as a full-time worker (under Post Graduate Work Permit status). As I understand from the eligibility criteria of this program, I have to have at least 12 months of full-time skilled work experience in Canada, which I have at this point. I meet all the other language/skilled worker/education requirements. My only concern right now is that I switched jobs within the 1 year. Right after graduation I was at a company where I was working full-time but under contract as a Research Associate. I was there as a consultant/contract person for 6 months, after which I was promoted to a permanent worker position. I worked there for 3 months as a permanent worker and then switched to my current job. I’ve been at this job for 4 months as a permanent full-time worker.

My question to you is I am not sure whether the 6 months I worked as a consultant/contract person meets the criteria to be counted within that 1 year full-time work experience that I need to show. I have pay stubs from the 6 months but the ROE I got after I resigned only states 3 months since the 6 months was only as a ‘consultant’.

I'm not an expert, but I'm about 99% sure that you can include all of your experience. Perhaps wait for others to comment, but like I said, I'm fairly certain you're fine to include it all.

There is a difference between a "contract employee" and a self-employed contractor ("consultant"). It sounds like you were self-employed for those first 6 months. As you are probably aware, self-employment is specifically excluded from the CEC class...

Your tax documents will help tell the story. Did you get both a T4 and a T4A from your first client/employer? Did you have to pay your own taxes for that first 6 months?

Good point, that didn't even occur to me. I had to pay my own taxes, did not receive a T4 from my employer. That means I was a self-employed contractor for the first 6 months doesn't it?

Yes, although your then-client should have still given you a T4A (unless all the experience was in 2016, in which case you will get it early next year). So unfortunately, you won't be able to include that initial period of work.

Hello,

My selfemployment was not declared by immigration agent in India while I applied Study Permit and than after I did same thing in my workpermit.

Is there anyway to claim my Indian work experience as selfemployed ?
