Customs officer was really nice, we told him she would be leaving to go home on feb 10 2017. He then stamped the passport with a stamp that said 02 JA 2017 a long with the point of entry's name.

What is the purpose of the stamp that says the date of entry?

That basically means she's been allowed in for a six month visit.

Thanks for the reply! I only asked because we have never had our passports stamped before!

Is there a reason for getting the stamp?

The stamp documents entry into a country, the date of entry and the port.

Travel the world, get your passport full of stamps of all varieties. ;D

Yeah, but OP's wondering why an American got stamped at the Canadian border, which is unusual.

When my Canadian partner and I cross the US border, my European passport gets a stamp, his Canadian passport is just looked at, and returned unmarked.

It's apparently common for cross border travel to not get the stamp. I would guess moreso at a land crossing. For example, my cousin is a dual citizen. Worked in Canada, Lived 10min away in the US. They didn't stamp any of her crossings.

But last time I went to the US by plane (we did a convention in Vegas), they asked the typical pair of questions: Where are you going? Business or pleasure? Then stamped the passport.
