Hello, I am a Canadian student in Ontario who met and fell in love with a Russian student during my studies. We have been dating for the majority of our Diploma studies. We both attend the same school and he is on a Study permit that is extended until September 2014. He will be applying for the Post-Graduate Work Permit once he Graduates in June. I want to know how we go about getting married while he is on a Post Graduate permit and if I will have to Sponsor him or will he become a PR by working hard and abiding by the rules of the Post-Graduate?
What I want to know is how do I marry an International Person in Canada and would it be best to have the wedding after he completes his two years of Post Graduate work and applies for PR on his own, or should we get married while he is still on the Post-Graduate permit and I apply to sponsor him? I am just confused on what we should do and how we should do it. Any help would be wonderful. Thank you!

Hi

There is nothing special that you need to do to marry him; it's really no different than marrying another Canadian.

If you get married or if you are common-law, you can sponsor him for PR. Or if he gains 1 year of experience in a qualifying skilled job (NOC A, B or 0) while on his PGWP, he could apply for PR through Canadian Experience Class. Generally, spousal sponsorship is the easier process, especially since there is no guarantee that he will get a skilled job after graduating.

When to get married is entirely up to you guys. There is no "better time", just whatever is best for you guys and your situation.
