Friends,

I have recently received my Canadian PR but still working in US on L1A visa.

Is there any process/rule wherein I can continue to reside & work in US and still ensure that my years here in US get accounted towards my citizenship gain in Canada. Is this true if my work requires me to be in US and hence this deputation works in that direction.

pls clarify.

thanks,

KY2CA

No - there is no way for you to work in the US and count these days towards Canadian citizenship (there is no "deputation"). To qualify for Canadian citizenship, you must show a commitment to Canada by actually living here. You'll need to wait until you can live in Canada for three out of four years before applying for citizenship.

You can count days worked outside of Canada towards your PR residency obligation if you were first hired by a Canadian company for a job in Canada and then later transferred to a job outside of Canada. But again, this is to retain PR status only (not for citizenship).

CIC are not keen on those who want Canadian Citizenship without 'throwing their lot in' with Canadians by actually physically living in Canada....your only options are:

1. Get your US employer to transfer you to Canada - this messes up any GC plans you may have though.

2. Get a job with the Federal, Territorial, Provincial Government or Public Service Commission of Canada e.g. The Military, Dept of Foreign Affairs in Canada then get 'deputation' back to the US...your time is classed as being in the Service of Canada and counts for citizenship.
