Hi Friends,

I am indian citizen, living/working in Singapore, Recently I have applied for Singapore PR last week, it takes around 3 months to get it approved in Singapore, and for long term I have plans to apply for Canadian PR (FSW).

It is possible to keep PR Status for Singapore and Canada at the same time, or it is not permitted by Canadian Laws.

I have read some where
"Q4: Immigration officer asked me if i am aware that we cannot hold the permanant residency of 2 country's and i told him yes i am aware."

Source:

Please advise
Pankaj

No. Canadian law does not permit. Once you take PR of another country and start living and working in that country, you cease to be PR of Canada.

My Singapore PR will be issued with in next 3 months. although i am planing to apply for canadian PR in month of July which will take approx 12 months for approval. during this time i will be living/working in singapore, once my canadian pr will be approved i will move to Canada.

My question is:

1. is the above senario valid?
2. is it possible after approval of my canadian PR i can opt for moving to canada in another year of so?
3. Singapore PR is not my priority, but Canadain PR is. So as I have applied for Singapore PR at this time and when my Possport will be called for visa stamping (Canadian PR) it will have Singapore PR, will that affact my chance to get Canada PR OR it doen't matter to them

4. No. Canadian law does not permit. Once you take PR of another country and start living and working in that country, you cease to be PR of Canada.

To you answer, as i will be already Singapore PR at the time of getting Canadain PR, what will be the situation.

Please explain any one?

You can apply for Canada PR even if you get PR of Singapore but when you get PR of Canada, you will have to make choice of one. You can not hold 2 PRs at the same time.

Can you show us the source for this?

I know someone who has held a Canadian PR and greencard (PR) at the same time.

strange Rupesh.

because neither US nor Canada allow this.

I called him to confirm that he had both and yes, he had both at the same time while living in the US. He let the Canada one expire but was traveling between the two countries without a visa for a while.

yes, rupeshhari is right, most of my relatives in USA holding citizenship of Canada along USA ciizenship

Yes it probably is correct. Many persons have both PR and "Green card" and they use one of these as needed without telling the immigration officer that they have both, but it is illegal. May be confirmed by calling boarder post.

Nimmiboy: Citizenshp is different issue. Canada allows dual citizenship.

The PR's of different countries have different rules. If you have a US green card, they can take it away from you as soon as they suspect you have moved to another country permanently. Taking the PR of another country certainly might be a reason but if you don't tell them, do they find out?

As far as I know, Canada PR doesn't care if you have other PR's as long as you live in Canada at least 2 years in any 5 year period.

Thanks all

Leon So you mean to say i will be able to keep Singapore PR while initially travelling to Canada for the first time?

Just make sure before you go. Because when you leave Canada, they will ask for your visa into SG (the airline will). If your PR is not valid anymore, then they won't let you into the plane.

I guess there are many greencard holders who have left US to Canada to get their PR and then come back (but it probably was driving).

rupeshhari ,

I didn't understand, may be you are talking about SG PR? Well what I am asking is, I have applied for SG PR, and hopefullI will get it in next 3 months, then during/after that I CAN I APPLY FOR CA PR?

If Yes, Will I have to surrender or cancel my SG PR before GETTING CA PR
or Before Flying to Canada
or Can I keep both the PRs and can fly to Canada and start living/working there for good, and travel to SG for week or so sometime? I knwo SG PR will be valid for 5 years and i won't renew it.

As far as I know, Canada will not do anything to invalidate your SG PR. Maybe you want to contact the embassy of Canada and ask them just in case but I have never heard that they care if you hold another PR. Will SG PR care that you get Canada PR, that I don't know. Once you get the PR visa in your passport, when you enter Singapore again after landing in Canada, they will see the Canadian PR visa so I have no idea what they will do about that.
